Incoming Breezes
The title of this exhibition is derived from “The flowers bloomed / The wind blew,” a line from a poem by Takahashi Motokichi, who was born in the late 19th century. Takahashi believed that it was fine to leave “mysterious things” as they were until we come to understand them better. To a poet like him, who approached things with an open mind, the world must have been filled with discoveries. In this exhibition, we focus on the moment when a simple occurrence turns into a meaningful experience in much the way that a mysterious thing can became a flower or the wind.
The four participating artists are concerned with ordinary experiences, such as viewing a marine or mountain landscape and engaging in an everyday event. The works are hard to pin down, but they are filled with an inexplicable charm. Take, for example, the works of Kawasumi Gakudai, whose faint paintings draw on experiences he had while diving and driving. Here, we are reminded of the expansion and contraction of time and space, and the light and shade of memory while also recalling physical sensations and emotional impressions created by the things we see and feel. Meanwhile, Sawada Hana delves deep into the small, often overlooked, mysteries contained in films, photographs, and everyday conversations; and Funakawa Shoji incorporates the weather into his work using sensors and wind gauges. And Sekigawa Kohei, who has continually updated his numerous works in realtime with the body and words, uses a variety of approaches to make highly suggestive art that deals with the things we experience. Please take this opportunity to enjoy these experiences made by four up-and-coming artists.
