Throughout his career, Taiji Matsue has visited various locations around the world to photograph sites for exhibition. The subjects that he selects include the bare rock faces of mountain valleys, densely forested areas with different types of trees, cities full of tall buildings, and sprawling towns lined with old houses. In all these cases, the subject is the surface of the landscape, the topography. Matsue has consistently pursued the planarity that he believes is the true nature of photography, and has imposed the following rules on his work: the composition must not include the horizon line, and the subject must be in direct light without generating shadow. Accordingly, the divisions between contrast and depth, and center and periphery are erased. This creates unique images that render all the components of the photograph equal. The subject of ANDES 06335 is the Andes, a mountain range that runs along the Pacific edge of South America.
