Work 92-1 [1992]

  • oil on canvas 56.5×41.5cm

[Audio Guide]

Roughly textured diagonal lines cross the white canvas, and paint protrudes from the left and bottom edges of the canvas like eaves. Take a moment and imagine how this work was created. In fact, it was made by repeatedly scratching the canvas with white paint applied using a pointed utensil, from the lower left to the upper right, then applying paint along the lines, letting it dry, and then scratching again. This process was reiterated about 60 times. It takes about a week for the paint to dry, so at least one year’s worth of time has accumulated on this white canvas. If we interpret this production method as an act of repeatedly assaulting and then soothing the surface, it seems like a physical and psychological action of damaging and healing. However, the light and shadows of the layers of white paint convey a supernatural impression that defies such a mundane reading.
