This exhibition traces the rich development of the art of Claude Monet (1840–1926) in his later years, as he explored “beyond Impressionism.” We are pleased to present, in addition to works drawn from vari-ous sources in Japan, nearly 50 pieces, some not previously seen in this country, on loan from the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, home to the world’s largest Monet collection.

Monet was in his forties when he moved to his final home in Giverny and began producing works set in the garden that he painstakingly created there. Above all, he devoted the latter half of his life to the theme of a pond with blooming water lilies, imagining an exhibition space in which visitors would be surrounded by large panels of “Water Lilies.” Our exhibition offers an opportunity to be immersed in the profound world of Monet’s “Water Lilies”—from precious early examples on this theme to the full flowering of his large-scale paintings.
