Inspired and influenced by the art of his era and of the past, Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898–1972) pursued his interest in geometric composition and its rigor, producing works that capture the very essence of visual arts. A multi-talented and progressive artist, Escher foretold movements such as Surrealism and Op (Optical) Art. The key to the artist’s creative world was not only in the realm of numbers, geometry, and mathematics―his propensity for bold ideas and expansive command of artistic language merged to pave a novel and remarkable path. For this, Escher can be considered an unusual case in art history, and a figure that captivates people in every generation.

This exhibition features around 160 pieces, including the Art Nouveau-inspired works from his early days as a pupil of Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, as well as works produced during his years in Italy. In addition, the exhibition offers the rare opportunity to experience the secrets behind the wonders of his work in the exhibition space and learn about the many underlying perspectival, geometric, and compositional paradoxes that continue to inspire a new generation of artists in all fields.
