This work was formed by applying red pigment to one side of a lead plate, making a slit, and twisting only one half of the plate. Is the red side the front or the back? Here, such hierarchical distinctions are invalidated. After studying abroad, Terauchi spent 20 years in the UK, and as she came into contact with various cultures, she became increasingly uncomfortable with dualistic ways of thinking. Front and back, up and down, right and left, good and evil: these pairs of opposites shift from time to time depending on our perspective. All manner of conflicts arise only when people position themselves in the center. Made with soft lead that can easily be reshaped, and with only one color of pigment, this piece makes a straightforward visual appeal to “a world without conflicting relationship,” and reveals “an entrance to a different approach to the world.”
