From 1962 until his death, Miki Tomio produced ears of various types. Upon being asked “Why do you make ears?” Miki answered, “There is no meaning.” In later years he said, “Ears chose me.” Severed from its rightful place, a gigantic ear looms large with its complex curve shape and undulating surface. A suggestive meaning is conveyed by the seam formed through the casting process. However, this enlarged ear represents “the pitiful humor that an ear is just an ear.” Moreover, in connection with the inner workings of the human body, from around 1965 Miki began displaying “Inner Ear” works.
