2014年１月からの豊田市美術館では、大正期の写実を紹介する「愛・知のリアリズム」展にあわせ、「手探りのリアリズム」と題して、コレクションを中心とした「村岡三郎の方へ」「かわりゆくリアル」のふたつのテーマ展をおこないます。
村岡三郎は鉄を用いた彫刻の日本でのパイオニアです。彼は熔断という高熱のバーナーで鉄を断ち切る方法の独特の手応えに（あるいは手応えの欠如に）まさしく手探りで日本人のリアリティを求めました。物質とエネルギーや精神との関連に着目する作家によって構成されたテーマ展「村岡三郎の方へ」は、惜しくも2013年に逝去した村岡へのささやかな追悼展でもあります。
「かわりゆくリアル」では主に20世紀初頭から2010年代までの作品を「リアリズム」をキーワードに紹介します。今日まで芸術家は、一般に考えられているような写実性や本物らしさだけではなく、眼前の世界や事物、あるいは歴史や社会といった大きな枠組みに対したときの、眼差しや手応えに、さらには物語や身体感覚をも巻き込みながら「新しいリアリズム」を追求し、更新してきました。本展では、岸田劉生などの日本における油画の写実表現からの影響をうかがうことのできる画家・横山奈美の作品を迎え、現在まで更新され続けるリアリズムをご覧いただきます。

From January 2014, Toyota Municipal Museum of Art holds collection exhibition “Reaching for Realism” by two themes “Toward Saburo Muraoka” and “Changing Realities.”
Saburo Muraoka (1928-2013), one of the first and eminent figure of metal sculptors in post-war Japan, explored reality as a Japanese through act of cutting iron by burner or compiling mass of salt in the gallery. His way to search into reality between materials and our spirit can be observed in other contemporary artists like Josef Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Isamu Wakabayashi, etc. In memory of the late Muraoka, passing in July 2013, with works by other artists, 7 works of his will be on view.
“Realism” seems to have been changing its meaning after the exploration of modern and contemporary art. Artists have not been satisfied with simple depiction of the world in conventional way or just in a photographic vision. Facing to the world, history and society, they search and update new realities with physical effect and response of materials, stories and imagination. “Changing Realities” shows works of Realisms from the beginning of 20th century to 2010s, including Nami Yokoyama, a young painter who gets inspiration from works of first Japanese realistic oil painters in early modern age.
